Diagnostic Audiological Assessment

The audiologists at Sandton Hearing & Balance test the hearing system (outer, middle and inner ear), diagnose the type and degree of hearing loss and provide referrals for any medical related concerns. Testing may include diagnostic otoacoustic emissions (OAE ) and auditory brainstem responses (ABR) if indicated. Cerumen (earwax) management is also performed if required.

Hearing Instruments

We see our patients as part of a strong partnership and love discussing hearing instrument solutions together. We explore different options and treat each case as a tailor-made solution. We explore our selection, evaluate hearing instruments on a trial basis, and implement precise hearing instrument programming with customised real ear verification and percentile analysis. Annual follow-ups, servicing and reprogramming of the hearing instruments allow for optimal settings year after year, which is also included in this service. We supply and support hearing instruments from Signia (Siemens), Oticon, Widex, Phonak, Unitron, Beltone and Starkey.

Counselling is provided as part of a standard diagnostic audiological assessment. Should you require further support, we will refer you for tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

Paediatric Audiological Care

Paediatric testing is a specific field of interest for our audiologists. We work in pairs to allow for a fun and comprehensive assessment of our younger patients. We conduct hearing tests on babies, toddlers and young children at fundamental stages to exclude the possibility of hearing loss. We diagnose and manage hearing loss and refer for any medical concerns. Our specific auditory brainstem responses (ABR) equipment allows for further diagnostic testing in many cases without the need for sedation.  For more information about these appointments, click here.

Dizziness and Balance Assessments

Vestibular testing is a specialized service using videonystagmography (VNG) to determine the site and presentation of dizziness and balance disturbances. Thereafter we work closely with a team of vestibular physiotherapists to assist in the rehabilitation of vestibular and balance disturbances. For more information about what to expect, click here.

We conduct annual hearing assessments and assist with custom hearing protection.

Hearing Protection Devices

We manage the ordering of custom-made swim-plugs, sleep-plugs and hearing protection devices for industrial noise exposure, motorcyclists, musicians and shooting of firearms.

Auditory Processing Assessment

Educational assessments can be conducted on school-aged children to determine their auditory processing skills, following an audiological assessment. This can provide information about how the brain processes what the ears hear.
